Ski jump competition

Norwegians are crazy about winter sports, especially XC skiing, biathalon and ski-jumping.  One of our neighborhood lots actually has a small ski-jump built on it.  As fancy as it sounds, well it is not, but I am actually the president on the board for my neighborhood (all 10 houses! haha) and since I am in the higher ranks around these parts (haha) a 14 year old neighbor of mine asked me earlier this month if we could sponsor a ski-jump competition, open for all "Frostinger" (Frostonians in English?).    I, of course, said yes.  He and his buddies planned everything and we held the first annual Nybokollen Ski-Jump Competition today.  (Nybo is the name of my neighborhood, and  "kollen" after one of the most famous ski jumps in Oslo called "Holmenkollen", click here to see it.)

It was a lovely 8 degrees (F) out, but blue skies and well-layered clothing helped us enjoy the day.  We only got 13 jumpers, but this was more than I expected since it's been over 20 years since the last time a jumping competition was held in our town.  We got quite a few spectators, and sold coffee and cake and hot dogs and drinks.

My teenage neighbor spent a lot of time preparing the jump, and even made a winners' podium:

A lot of these kids used their XC skis to jump!

And the winner is:

haha.   Right now I'm pleased that my kids are still satisfied by using it as a sledding hill.  Wish me luck when that changes. (*gulp*)
